Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi held a meeting with Mr. Daniel Kenzhetayevich Akhmetov, the Prime Minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan at the Prime Minister's Official Residence.

At the beginning of the meeting, Prime Minister Koizumi welcomed Prime Minister Akhmetov's visit to Japan and expressed his appreciation for Kazakhstan's participation in the EXPO 2005 Aichi, Japan.

Prime Minister Akhmetov stated that he welcomed the substantial agreement reached at the recent bilateral negotiations between Japan and Kazakhstan on Kazakhstan's accession to the World Trade Organisation (WTO). He expressed his support for Japan's bid to become a permanent member of the United Nations (UN) Security Council, giving support to Japan's position on the UN Security Council reform. Furthermore, Prime Minister Akhmetov expressed his gratitude for Japan's official development assistance (ODA) to Kazakhstan, and the two countries agreed to continue to cooperate with each other.

Prime Minister Koizumi expressed his expectation for reform efforts in Kazakhstan, including the transition to a market economy, to continue to advance.
