Japan-Romania Summit Meeting

Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi held a meeting with Mr. Traian Basescu, the President of Romania at the Prime Minister's Official Residence.

At the meeting, the two leaders discussed the reform of the United Nations (UN) Security Council, Romania's accession to the European Union (EU) and bilateral cooperation in the area of environment, among other topics.

At the beginning of the meeting, President Basescu expressed his gratitude for the economic cooperation provided by Japan following the democratic revolution in Romania in 1989, explaining that the cooperation contributed to making the transition less challenging. As for the reform of the UN Security Council, President Basescu remarked that Romania supports the position of the Group of Four (G4), to which Prime Minister Koizumi expressed his appreciation. Prime Minister Koizumi further requested that Romania cosponsor the framework resolution on the reform of the UN Security Council, and President Basescu commented that Romania supports Japan's position.

Furthermore, Prime Minister Koizumi noted on Romania's accession to the EU by saying, "I congratulate Romania's signing of the EU Accession Treaty. Japan intends to assist the reforms of Romania towards its accession to the EU."

With regards to environmental issues, Prime Minister Koizumi said, "I am pleased to announce on this occasion the document on cooperation through the Kyoto Mechanism. There are many areas in which Romania and Japan can cooperate in the field of environment." In response, President Basescu stated, "Romania ratified the Kyoto Protocol in 2001," and expressed his appreciation for the cooperation provided by Japan.
