Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi held a meeting with and a dinner reception for Mr. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, the President of the Republic of Indonesia at the Prime Minister's New Residential Quarters, which was completed this April.

This was the first time Prime Minister Koizumi invited a foreign dignitary visiting Japan as an official guest to the Prime Minister's New Residential Quarters. Prime Minister Koizumi escorted President Yudhoyono to the tea-ceremony room which was designed as a meeting space to host both officials from Japan and abroad. As President Yudhoyono studied with curiosity the tatami room in which there is an alcove and a tea urn and the interior of the Japanese-style room next door, Prime Minister Koizumi explained with a smile on his face that they are "Japanese-style."

After the meeting, the two leaders moved to the lounge where they signed a joint document. After the signing of the document, Prime Minister Koizumi said, "Today I invited President Yudhoyono to the Prime Minister's New Residential Quarters. He is the first foreign leader to visit the facility. I sincerely welcome the visit of President Yudhoyono which will lend to enhancing our new partnerships with Indonesia. We have issued a joint document and have also decided to establish an eminent person's meeting to consider the most appropriate ways of cooperation in various areas, including starting the negotiation for an economic partnership agreement (EPA) and implementing countermeasures against piracy."

In response, President Yudhoyono commented, "Our talks today will lead to further cooperation between our two countries. I am pleased that we have signed the joint document today. Furthermore, I greatly appreciate the assistance provided by Japan in responding to the tsunami and earthquakes."
