Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi visited Kabukicho in Shinjuku Ward, Tokyo in the evening to survey the public safety of the area under the guidance of Ms. Hiroko Nakayama, the Mayor of Shinjuku Ward. Prime Minister Koizumi received an explanation from Mayor Nakayama on the public safety and city planning measures undertaken in Shinjuku Ward. Since entering the year 2005, Kabukicho has been striving to vitalize the district and improve its safety with the cooperation of the local residents, companies, Shinjuku Ward and the police force.

Prime Minister Koizumi, under the guidance of Mayor Nakayama, made a tour to examine the surveillance cameras and the site where numerous people had fallen victim to a fire in a multiple-tenant building in September 2001. Furthermore, he received an explanation on the poles installed on the street to prevent illegal parking. Prime Minister Koizumi also observed a pachinko parlor and an information center for adult entertainment stores.

After making his observations, Prime Minister Koizumi said, "What is most important is how the visitors to this lively district will enjoy their time here without putting their safety in danger. The district should not become a home to Bouryokudan 'Japanese organized crime groups' or other crime organizations."
