Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi held a summit meeting with Mr. Hun Sen, the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, at the Prime Minister's Official Residence.

At the meeting, Prime Minister Hun Sen requested that Japan (1) maintain the quantity of assistance to Cambodia, despite the yearly reduction in overall quantity of Japanese official development assistance (ODA), or, if this is difficult, maintain the quality of ODA, (2) provide assistance for the CLV (Cambodia, Lao People's Democratic Republic, Socialist Republic of Viet Nam) Development Triangle, and (3) cooperate in the building of the Second Mekong International Bridge, among other items.

In response, Prime Minister Koizumi said that Japan's financial situation is tight, but that Japan's prosperity rests upon peace and stability in the world. Prime Minister Koizumi expressed his intention to increase the amount of ODA and enhance the quality of ODA, and to give consideration to the CLV Development Triangle, Second Mekong International Bridge and other items.

Prime Minister Hun Sen said that Cambodia has, since 1999, consistently supported Japan becoming a permanent member of the United Nations (UN) Security Council.
