Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi held a meeting with Mr. Horst Koehler, the President of the Federal Republic of Germany at the Prime Minister's Official Residence.

At the meeting, the two leaders discussed about enhancement of Japan-Germany cooperation, cooperation in the international community in such areas as the United Nations (UN) Reform, structural reforms that Japan and Germany are each promoting, among other topics.

At the beginning of the meeting, Prime Minister Koizumi noted on the Japan-Germany relations and the Year of "Germany in Japan 2005/2006" by saying, "The sense of affinity towards Germany appears to be weakening among the younger generation in Japan compared to our generation and older generations. I intend to promote exchanges between our countries in various fields from economy, culture to sports." In response, President Koehler said, "The Year of 'Germany in Japan 2005/2006' will serve as a good opportunity. I hope to increase and expand the interest of the younger generation in particular."

With regard to the structural reforms undertaken by Japan and Germany, the two leaders shared the view that it is important to be optimistic and not pessimistic. President Koehler further stated that, "Japan has been investing quite a sum in technology development despite its economic downturn. This will serve as a good example for Germany," and also remarked that a resolution needs to be sought from a long-term perspective to address the issue of decreasing birthrate and aging society. Prime Minister Koizumi, in response to this said, "We are also tackling the decreasing birthrate and aging society and regard them as critical issues. Japan has learned a lot from Germany's social security policy, including the long-term care insurance system." President Koehler commented on the decision that established the framework for the bill on the privatization of the postal services that, "Prime Minister Koizumi has been working on this issue with patience and persistence. I believe the privatization will be realized." Prime Minister Koizumi expressed his view that it is a pressing issue, saying "Privatization of the postal services is facing opposition from all political parties."

As for cooperation in the international community, the two leaders agreed on the policy to enhance the cooperative relationship between the two countries for realization of peace and stability of the international community, including cooperation towards the UN Security Council Reform.
