Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi conducted a ceremony honoring contributors to the promotion of barrier-free environments at the Prime Minister's Official Residence.

This ceremony is to honor organizations and individuals that have made outstanding achievements and contributions from the viewpoint of effectively and comprehensively promoting barrier-free environments throughout society, in both soft and hard aspects, so that all people, including the elderly and handicapped, can lead a safe and pleasant social life.

This year marks the third ceremony and two local governments received the Prime Minister's commendation. One was Konan City in Shiga Prefecture, where the relevant agencies worked together in supportive activities to precisely meet the individual needs of each child with a handicap. The other was Nanto City in Toyama Prefecture, which endeavored to vitalize the local community through the use of IT, by constructing and administering a system so that anyone can easily transmit and receive information about their local town.
