Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi attended the "Science and Technology in Society Forum (STS Forum)" which took place in Kyoto City. This STS forum, with the participation of close to 500 opinion leaders of various sectors including politics, economy and science, among others, from approximately 50 countries, is designed to discuss various issues brought about by science and technology, such as global warming, under the theme of "lights and shadows of science and technology."

In his keynote address at the opening ceremony, Prime Minister Koizumi said, "Environmental protection and economic development are mutually achievable and sustainable. The key to achieve both is the power of science and technology. This conference hall is the place where the Kyoto Protocol for global warming prevention was finalized. It is my hope that from here in the ancient city Kyoto, another new endeavor for knowledge activities will spread around the world. I am sure that such efforts will bring further "brightness" to more and more people, and be a source of well-being and prosperity." This STS Forum is a three-day conference including concurrent sessions and panel discussions on energy issues and cloning technologies, with a plenary session scheduled on the last day.
