Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi held a New Year's Press Conference at the Prime Minister's Official Residence.

During the conference, Prime Minister Koizumi noted on the structural reform that, "We have sowed many seeds of reform, and the buds are coming to be seen. In order to nurture the buds into a large tree, I would like to relentlessly advance reforms," and expressed his determination to firmly continue with the reform policy.

Furthermore, Prime Minister Koizumi noted on the humanitarian and reconstruction assistance to Iraq that, "Japan should continue to provide assistance for the efforts of the people of Iraq to build a stable, democratic government," and emphasized on the significance of the humanitarian and reconstruction assistance provided by the Self Defense Forces (SDF) to Iraq.

Moreover, on the issue of North Korea, Prime Minister Koizumi again placed emphasis on the basic policy to comprehensively solve the pending issues including nuclear and abduction issues for the normalization of the relations between Japan and North Korea, and expressed his intention to make an effort in solving the issues through early resumption of the six-party talks.
