Awards Ceremony to Present the Prime Minister's Commendations on Traffic Safety Measures

The Awards Ceremony to Present the Prime Minister's Commendations on Traffic Safety Measures took place at the Prime Minister's Official Residence.

The awards recognized the significant achievements made by prefectures around the nation in reducing the number of traffic fatalities in light of the fact that the number of fatalities from traffic accidents in the last year was 8,326, a reduction to halve the 16,765 fatalities from traffic accidents in 1970, an age which was called "Traffic War."

At the Awards Ceremony the Governors of Yamanashi Prefecture, Kyoto Prefecture, Hiroshima Prefecture, Kagawa Prefecture, Kochi Prefecture, Saga Prefecture, Nagasaki Prefecture and Oita Prefecture were presented with certificates by Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi.

Prime Minister Koizumi stated his resolve to achieve a further halving in the number of fatalities from traffic accidents during the next decade and make Japan the safest nation in the world in terms of road traffic, as he announced in his statement of January 2, 2003.
