Prime Minister Reshuffles the Cabinet


Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi reshuffled his Cabinet for the first time since the launch of his administration.

Prime Minister Koizumi appointed six new ministers, designating Tadamori Ohshima as Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Shunichi Suzuki as Minister of the Environment, Sadakazu Tanigaki as Chairman of the National Public Safety Commission and Minister of State for the Food Safety Commission (provisional name) and Related Matters, Shigeru Ishiba as Minister of State for Defense, Hiroyuki Hosoda as Minister of State for Okinawa and Northern Territories Affairs, Science and Technology Policy and IT Policy, and Yoshitada Kounoike as Minister of State for Disaster Management and Special Zones for Structural Reform. Furthermore, Minister of State for Economic and Fiscal Policy Heizo Takenaka is to serve concurrently as Minister of State for Financial Services.

Speaking at an evening press conference following the first meeting of the new Cabinet, Prime Minister Koizumi expressed his resolve to advance economic revitalization and further promote administrative and fiscal reforms under the recognition that there can be "no growth without reform."
