Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, currently visiting the United States to attend a memorial ceremony in honor of the victims of the terrorist attacks of September 11, departed Boston, his first stop, and later arrived in New York.

In the afternoon, Prime Minister Koizumi delivered a speech at the Council on Foreign Relations addressing the revitalization of the Japanese economy, the issue of structural reform, the issue of Iraq, and his upcoming visit to North Korea.

Prime Minister Koizumi then visited the site of the World Trade Center, which was destroyed in the terrorist attacks on September 11 last year, laying flowers in prayer for the victims. Prime Minister Koizumi also visited a shrine for the victims close to the site, paying silent tribute. Prime Minister Koizumi stated, "The scars run deep and the extent of the damage is indeed great. The depth of sorrow shows," and, "We will continue the fight against terrorism."
