On the second day of the Johannesburg Summit 2002, Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi participated in a round-table discussion with world leaders. Prime Minister Koizumi introduced the experience of Japan, which has put great effort into anti-pollution measures, and he expressed Japan's intention to apply technologies devised to eliminate pollution in the advancement of developing countries, and to contribute through capacity building and technical cooperation for pollution prevention in developing countries.

At a press conference after the round-table, regarding the outcome of the Summit, Prime Minister Koizumi stated, "I am pleased that we were able to gain the understanding and support of other nations regarding Japan's position of extending assistance while respecting self-help efforts and ownership," and "I have renewed my conviction that it is important to make efforts in cooperation with other countries in the world in order to achieve sustainable development."

The Johannesburg Summit will adopt an implementation document and a political declaration, and is scheduled to close on September 4.
