Prime Minister Meets with the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan
Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi met with President Islam Abduganievich Karimov of the Republic of Uzbekistan at the Prime Minister's Official Residence.
At the meeting, President Karimov expressed his deep appreciation for Japan's "Silk Road diplomacy" and welcomed Japan's recent dispatch of the Silk Road Energy Mission and the dispatch of Self Defense Forces ships to the Indian Ocean in the wake of the terrorist attacks in the United States, requesting that Japan further strengthen its political role in the region. In response, Prime Minister Koizumi stated, "In light of the change to an era of U.S.-Russia collaboration, I would like to build new cooperative relations between Japan and Uzbekistan."
Afterward, the two leaders signed a Joint Statement which incorporates collaboration and cooperation in fields such as politics, security, economics, energy and international society.
