Prime Minister Meets with Prime Minister
of the Hellenic Republic

Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi met with Prime Minister Constantinos Simitis of the Hellenic Republic at the Prime Minister's Official Residence.

During the meeting, the two leaders came to a common understanding that they would take advantage of the opportunity of mutual visits at the leader level in order to further develop the cooperative relations between Japan and Greece as partners.

Prime Minister Koizumi stated that Japan and Greece should make efforts to deepen their relations in various areas including the economic and cultural spheres. Prime Minister Koizumi also praised the role played by Greece in the political and economic sectors to contribute to the stability of the Balkan region and stated that Japan intended to cooperate with Greece in working for the eradication of international terrorism and for reconstruction assistance to Afghanistan.

In response, Prime Minister Simitis stated that, given that Greece would hold the Presidency of the European Union (EU) in the first half of 2003, there is a need to strengthen bilateral relations between Japan and Greece within the framework of Japan-EU relations. He also mentioned that Greece intended to further enhance bilateral relations with Japan, encompassing economic as well as cultural sectors.

Furthermore, after the meeting, a signing ceremony was held for the Japan-Greece Joint Action Plan outlining measures for future cooperation between Japan and Greece.
