This afternoon Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi visited the Kingdom of Thailand, the third country on his tour of Southeast Asian nations, and held a Summit Meeting with Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

At the meeting, Prime Minister Koizumi stated that Japan intended to develop relations with ASEAN by "acting together and advancing together" as sincere and open partners, explaining three pillars of Japan's approach: (1) Ensuring prosperity in both countries by advancing reform and through the Initiative for Japan-ASEAN Comprehensive Economic Partnership; (2) Regional stability through joint efforts; and (3) Cooperation for the future, including the Year of Japan-ASEAN Exchange and the Initiative for Development in East Asia. Prime Minister Thaksin expressed his support of and cooperation with these views and proposals.

Prime Minister Koizumi also stated that Japan would continue to support promotion of small and medium-size enterprises and One Village, One Product Movement in Thailand, and both leaders agreed to continue to cooperate on anti-drug measures in the region of the border between Thailand and the Union of Myanmar, among other issues.
