Prime Minister Attends Opening Ceremony of Swan Cafe and Bakery, Akasaka

Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi attended the opening ceremony of the Swan Cafe & Bakery, Akasaka, in Tokyo.

The bakery is run under a policy of actively employing handicapped persons, the main business being the sale of bread and other bakery products as well as a coffee shop. There is also a home delivery service for bakery products and coffee and it is planned to create a corner in the shop to sell products made at welfare facilities from around the country.

Prime Minister Koizumi offered his encouragement to the bakery staff, stating, "The concept of this bakery is a truly wonderful idea for the employment and social participation of handicapped persons. Trying to do the things that are thought to be impossible is something that we too should learn. " The Prime Minister then handed as a congratulatory gift a hand-written calligraphy plaque to a staff representative, on which were written words taken from the analects of Confucius, "No state can exist without the trust of the people."
