Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi made a one-day visit to the Republic of Korea to hold a Summit Meeting with President Kim Dae Jung.

Prior to the Summit talks, Prime Minister Koizumi paid visits to the national cemetery and Sodaemun Independence Park, and offered flowers.

Furthermore, the Prime Minister met with the bereaved family of Lee Su Hyon, a Korean studying in Japan, who was struck by a train and killed while attempting to rescue a man who fell onto the tracks from the platform at East Japan Railway Shin-Okubo station in Tokyo this January.

The Summit Meeting with President Kim Dae Jung took place at the Chong Wa Dae (Blue House Presidential Office) in Seoul. The leaders had a frank exchange of views on various current issues in Japan-Republic of Korea relations and on how to advance bilateral relations in a future-oriented manner.

During the talks, President Kim highly appreciated the words of the Prime Minister Koizumi at Sodaemun Independence Park, in which he expressed remorse and apology for Japan's colonial domination.

In terms of the series of terrorist attacks in the United States, Prime Minister Koizumi explained the response being taken by Japan, including the Anti-Terrorism Special Measures Bill. In response, President Kim stated: "I understand and have no objection." President Kim also stated: "I would like it to be done within the framework of the Peace Constitution, given the concerns of the nations of Asia." The leaders also exchanged views on history textbooks, visits to Yasukuni Shrine, and a saury fishing dispute. They also discussed the efforts being made to build a future-oriented relationship based on the Japan-Republic of Korea Joint Declaration of October 1998, and talked over measures for the successful 2002 World Cup soccer finals to be co-hosted by the two counties, as well as a Japan-Republic of Korea bilateral investment agreement, Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and other matters.
