Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi met with President of the Republic of Maldives Maumoon Abdul Gayoom at the Prime Minister's Official Residence.|
During the meeting the leaders referred to the multiple terrorist attacks that occurred in the United States, with Prime Minister Koizumi expressing his view that these attacks should not be considered as linked to Islam, and President Gayoom stating his concurrence with that view as the leader of the Maldives, a nation whose official religion is Islam.
Furthermore, President Gayoom expressed his gratitude for the economic cooperation extended by Japan to the Maldives in a wide range of sectors. The President also stated that he expects the Government of Japan to play a leading role in addressing global environmental issues.
