The first Meeting to Study the Direct Election of the Prime Minister was held at the Prime Minister's Official Residence, with Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi in attendance. This meeting has been convened under the recognition that it is of the utmost importance to widen the people of Japan's participation in politics and in order to encourage national debate on the modalities of the relationship between the Prime Minister and the people, the Prime Minister called on knowledgeable people from all fields to attend the meeting.

The Meeting to Study the Direct Election of the Prime Minister is expected to be held approximately once a month and a report is planned to be compiled one year later. At the next meeting (to be held in August) it is planned that points of issue, points of concern and points for discussion and consideration will be brought up, based on the aims of the meeting.
