Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi attended a meeting of the Central Disaster Prevention Council held at the Prime Minister's Official Residence. It was decided to establish a Expert committee within the Council to examine in detail three items: (1) modalities of future anti-earthquake measures; (2) enhancement of disaster prevention measures including those for Tonankai and Nankai earthquakes; and (3) revisions of the Basic Plan for Earthquake Disaster Prevention. Furthermore, the Council approved housing damage recognition standards and operational guidelines relating to disasters, and Council Member Megumi Mizoue, Chair of the Expert Committee on Tokai Earthquakes, explained the history of studies on the review of estimated earthquake focal regions and other matters. Prime Minister Koizumi stated that he would make his utmost efforts for everyday disaster prevention measures that provide against large-scale disasters in order to ensure that Japan is a country in which its people can truly live free of anxiety and in safety.
