An advisory council meeting was convened at the Prime Minister's Official Residence to discuss the modalities of the three state-owned postal services. At the opening, Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi stated that, "The issues of postal services is one of the largest challenges we are facing, having an enormous impact on future administrative and fiscal reforms, and is one of the predominant agenda items to be tackled by my Cabinet." The Prime Minister added, "Before, it was taboo to touch upon the possibility of privatizing the three state-owned postal services. However, I wish that this panel will undertake discussions over the coming year, including those on privatization, forswearing arbitrary and biased views on the modalities for the postal services after they have been reorganized as public corporations." At this first meeting the schedule for future meetings (approximately once per month) and the future framework for advancing discussions were confirmed.
