Prime Minister Naoto Kan held a meeting of the Ministerial Committee on the Formulation of the Budget at the Prime Minister's Office.

Discussion took place on the examination of the state of progress of the Fiscal Management Strategy and on an estimation of mid- to long-term economic and fiscal figures.

In his opening address, the Prime Minister said, "It is no exaggeration to say that this Ministerial Meeting on the Formulation of the Budget is the most important Ministerial Meeting for deciding fiscal policy and matters related to the other large frameworks handled by the Cabinet.
This meeting is very important for issues such as the combined reform of social security and the taxation system, on which work is being led by Minister Kaoru Yosano, as these issues are related to the entirety of fiscal policy. I would like the members of this meeting to determine a clear direction in which to move forward while considering a report on how to manage Japan's fiscal policy in the future."
