Prime Minister Naoto Kan attended the ceremony to commemorate the 120th anniversary of the establishment of the Diet, held in the Diet in the presence of Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress of Japan and Their Imperial Highnesses Prince and Princess Akishino.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, the President of the House of Councillors, and the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court were among the other attendees of this commemorative ceremony, who each delivered their congratulatory remarks.

In his congratulatory remarks, Prime Minister Kan said, "Amidst a significant change in the situation surrounding Japan, the Diet has been expected to play an increasingly large role in protecting the people's prosperous lives and creating a peaceful world together with other nations. I sincerely hope that the Diet will carry out this grave responsibility with the support of the people's active participation in politics."
