Prime Minister Naoto Kan held the third meeting of the Headquarters against Foot-and-Mouth Disease at the Prime Minister's Office.

At the start of the meeting, the Prime Minister said, "The outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease presents a grave challenge for risk management and it is necessary for the Kan Cabinet and the entire government to tackle the outbreak in Miyazaki Prefecture. Under the leadership of the Headquarters against Foot-and-Mouth Disease, the government will continue to make the utmost efforts to prevent the spread of the disease, rehabilitate the operations of farms that were affected, and provide financial support to the local government, so that the local community can undertake measures with a sense of reassurance. I would like to ask the Ministers present here today to direct each ministry and make the utmost effort so that these measures will be fully effective and lead to a cleanup of the disease and rehabilitation of the region's livestock industry and regional economy as soon as possible."
