The vote to designate the Prime Minister took place at both the House of Representatives and the House of Councillors in the afternoon of June 4. Mr. Naoto Kan, a member of the House of Representatives, was designated as the Prime Minister. Prime Minister Kan became the 94th Prime Minister (the 61st person to assume the post) since Hirobumi Ito, the first Prime Minister of Japan.
