Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda held talks with His Excellency Prof. Ing. Vaclav Klaus, President of the Czech Republic, at the Prime Minister's Office.

At the beginning of the meeting, Prime Minister Fukuda said, "Last year marked the 50th anniversary of the restoration of Japan-Czech relations. I am truly delighted to see Japan-Czech Republic relations developing in a wide range of areas, including politics, the economy, and tourism. The Czech Republic will hold the EU presidency during the first half of 2009. I hope that Japan-European Union (EU) relations, and our bilateral relations, will further advance during your presidency."

At the meeting, the leaders exchanged opinions on various matters, such as climate change, the United Nations Security Council reform, the situation in Georgia, and the North Korean issue, and they agreed to cooperate in efforts to address various issues facing the international community.
