Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda held a meeting of the Government and Ruling Parties Council on Comprehensive Measures for Bringing About Peace of Mind at the Prime Minister's Office.

At the meeting, an outline of comprehensive measures was announced in response to the surge in food and crude oil prices and the economic downturn, based on the following three pillars: (1) response to price hikes; (2) measures for bringing about a low-carbon society and for energy conservation; and (3) facilitating a response to a new price structure. It was decided that specific measures will be formulated by the earliest possible date.

Prime Minister Fukuda said, "Based on the principles and pillars discussed today, I expect the Government and the ruling parties to join hands in immediately clarifying an overall vision of the comprehensive measures for bringing about peace of mind and to implement the measures, step by step, without delay."
