Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda received a courtesy call from a delegation of 30 youths from the People's Republic of China at the Prime Minister's Office.

The courtesy call was made as part of the events of the Japan-China Youth Friendship Exchange Year. Those invited to visit Japan and pay a courtesy call at the Prime Minister's Office are students of Peking University, the youth representatives from fields such as science and technology, medicine, the environment, energy, youth organizations, and civil service, as well as junior high and high school students who lost their families to the large-scale earthquake that hit Sichuan Province in May of this year.

Prime Minister Fukuda said, "Welcome to Japan. I sincerely hope that the mutual understanding and friendship between the youths in Japan and China will further deepen through various symposiums and exchange events this Japan-China Youth Friendship Exchange Year. I am convinced that the Japanese and Chinese youths will be the ones who will carve out a bright future of not only Japan-China relations but also of Asia and the world. Also, I hear that some of the junior high and high school students who lost their families to the large-scale earthquake in Sichuan Province are visiting Japan on this occasion. I would like to extend my heartfelt sympathy to them on behalf of the people of Japan. We wish for the earliest possible recovery from the disaster and the Government of Japan intends to provide whatever support it can. Please remember that we are always with the friends in hardship."

In response, the leader of the Chinese Youth Delegation said, "During our visit this time, we made many friends through exchanges with the Japanese youth in various places. Our delegation includes junior high and high school students from the region affected by the earthquake in Sichuan Province. We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude for the warm support extended by the people of Japan to those who suffered from the earthquake disaster."
