Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda attended the 2nd meeting of the National Conference on Fostering Beautiful Forests in Japan held at the National City Center in Tokyo.

The National Conference on Fostering Beautiful Forests in Japan is an organization to promote, from the private sector side, the National Campaign to Foster Beautiful Forests in Japan, a joint public-private sector undertaking. A declaration for action was adopted at their 1st meeting in June of last year, with the catch phrase of "Let's Hand on the Culture of Trees, and Let's Conserve the Beautiful Forests."

In his address, Prime Minister Fukuda said, "Forests are very important from the perspective of the environment. I sincerely hope that you will continue your efforts to foster forests. The National Conference on Fostering Beautiful Forests in Japan is taking the initiative in advancing movements and activities from a wide range of standpoints, such as forest maintenance including tree planting and thinning, and use of domestic timber. I do hope that such activities will continue to be reinforced. For its part, the Government, too, will do its utmost to address the environmental issues. The conservation of forests is an essential task of the Government. I would like to call on everyone here to gather together our wisdom to make Japan a beautiful country."

The Prime Minister furthermore explained that July 7 is designated as Cool Earth Day for each and every one of the people of Japan to reflect on the environmental issues, urging the participants to think about what would be best for the environment and to act on it. In response, a declaration was made at the meeting, which committed to various activities as it states, "In line with Cool Earth Day, we pledge to take actions to foster beautiful forests in Japan, beginning with what we can do on a daily basis, such as cherishing nature in our everyday lives. We are also committed to foster beautiful forests that maintain biodiversity, and to pass them on to the future generations."
