Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda held the 14th meeting of the Council on Economic and Fiscal Policy at the Prime Minister's Office.

At the meeting, the economic growth strategy was compiled, which includes a new employment strategy for enhancing the employment of 2.2 million elderly people, youths, and women. The economic growth strategy also consists of initiatives to make Japan more open to the world, with plans to liberalize the aviation market and a Plan for 300,000 Exchange Students. The strategy further sets forth an Environmental Energy Technology Revolution Plan and the creation of super special zones, both intended to further harness Japan's strengths.

Prime Minister Fukuda said, "It is essential that we strengthen our growth potential in order to overcome the unprecedented aging of our society, and to lead the world. Since the end of last year, the Council has been actively discussing the three pillars of building a nation that is open to the world, an economy in which all participate, and a strategy for innovative technologies. I believe that the Council's latest economic growth strategy outlines policies that characterize this Cabinet. Today, the Council launched discussions toward the compilation of the Basic Policies 2008. By incorporating the economic growth strategy as an important pillar, I would like to make the Basic Policies the Fukuda Cabinet's guideline for enhancing growth potential."
