At the meeting, the two leaders discussed bilateral cooperation, international situations and other issues. At a joint press conference that followed, Prime Minister Fukuda said, "I believe that it was very significant to confirm that Japan will cooperate with Sweden, which assumes the Presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU) in the second half of 2009, in addressing various issues faced by the international community such as climate change and peace building. The Minister for the Environment and the Minister for Trade of Sweden are also in Japan right now with Prime Minister Reinfeldt. I think this is an ideal opportunity for our government officials and business community to exchange opinions with them so as to further advance bilateral cooperation in the areas of the environment and trade. I intend to continue cooperating closely with Prime Minister Reinfeldt in order to advance our bilateral relations as partners with shared basic values."
