On the second day of his visit to the People's Republic of China, Prime Minister Fukuda met with Mr. Wen Jiabao, the Premier of the State Council of China, after attending the welcoming ceremony hosted by Premier Wen.

At the meeting, the leaders confirmed the stance that "Japan and China must, hand in hand, contribute to the development of Asia and the rest of the world," and that "the two countries will cooperate in a responsible form, while looking carefully at the bigger picture in the world." The two leaders also agreed that "Mr. Hu Jintao, the President of China, would visit Japan around the cherry blossom season next year." Furthermore, they agreed to promote mutual trust through youth exchanges involving 4,000 people, to strengthen mutually-beneficial cooperation by holding high-level dialogues on topics such as protection of intellectual property rights, and to reinforce cooperation in addressing the issue of climate change. Moreover, the two leaders shared the firm determination to achieve early resolution of the issue of resource development in the East China Sea, and agreed to strengthen their cooperation for the resolution of the North Korean nuclear issue. With regard to the incident that took the life of Ms. Benazir Bhutto, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, Prime Minister Fukuda and Premier Wen shared the view that they would absolutely not tolerate any acts of terrorism.

After holding a joint press conference with Premier Wen, Prime Minister Fukuda delivered a speech at Peking University in the afternoon, followed by a meeting in the evening with Mr. Wu Bangguo, the Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress of China, and a dinner meeting with President Hu.
