Prime Minster Yasuo Fukuda, together with the Cabinet members concerned, attended a meeting of the Council of Executives of Public and Private Sectors to Promote Work-Life Balance at the Prime Minister's Official Residence.

The purpose of the meeting was to formulate, and thereby promote the implementation of, a charter and action policy for achieving work-life balance through the united efforts of the public and private sectors. The aim is to realize a society in which everyone can freely choose the way they live in each one of the life stages, not only as they lead their lives in workplaces but also in family lives and as a member of the community. In its second meeting, the Council members decided on the Charter for Work-Life Balance and the Action Policy for Promoting Work-Life Balance, and presented them to the Prime Minister.

Prime Minister Fukuda said in his address, "I am convinced that we can reverse the current trend of the declining birthrate, once we achieve a country of hope and reassurance, where the people can hope for a better tomorrow and lead their lives of today with a sense of reassurance. In order for that to happen, the awareness of each and every one of the people, including workers, be they employers or employees, must be reformed." Furthermore, the Prime Minister stated that he intended to convene a national commission for examining the social security system, and indicated his expectation for the commission to conduct discussions through which the people can envision the ideals of social security and the role to be played by the government in the social security system. Prime Minister Fukuda asked the Council members for their continued cooperation in that respect.
