Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda held a meeting with Mr. Apisai Ielemia, the Prime Minister of Tuvalu, at the Prime Minister's Official Residence.

At the meeting, Prime Minister Fukuda referred to the strong interest among the Japanese people in the climate change issue that Tuvalu faced, and stated that Prime Minister Ielemia's participation in the Asia-Pacific Water Summit held recently in Beppu City, Japan, was of great significance. Prime Minister Fukuda further said that Japan would provide non-project grant aid to Tuvalu this year as well, continuing from the previous year, and would consider further assistance measures to be extended to the country.

Prime Minister Ielemia said in response that the Asia-Pacific Water Summit offered good opportunities for the participants to exchange opinions on regional issues. He further expressed his gratitude to Japan for the roles it played for the stability and prosperity of the Pacific Island Countries, and asked for further assistance for the resolution of issues, including the issue of rising in sea levels.

Prime Minister Fukuda said that as part of measures to cope with climate change issues, Japan is planning the dispatch of a research team to Tuvalu to investigate the possibilities of Japan's cooperation. Prime Minister Fukuda further asked Prime Minister Ielemia for cooperation as a joint proposing country for setting up a negotiation forum joined by all nations to seek an effective future framework for reducing greenhouse gases. Prime Minister Ielemia expressed his agreement on this cooperation.
