Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda attended the 5th general meeting of the Tax Commission held at the Prime Minister's Official Residence.

Since September 2007, the Commission has been conducting full-fledged discussions on the modality of the taxation system in the 21st century, and deliberating on a report to be compiled.

Prime Minister Fukuda said in his address, "For the social security system, including the pension system, which has close links to the people's livelihoods, it is essential - and particularly so, given our aging society - that we build, from a long-term perspective, systems that will ensure the people's trust long into the future. It is the responsibility of politicians to envision the future of the social security system or of our nation that is now undergoing declining birthrates, and to secure a stable supply of revenue sources necessary for the realization of that vision, so as not to shift the burden onto the shoulders of future generations."
