Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda held a meeting of seven ministers on domestic measures to prevent global warming at the Prime Minister's Official Residence.

This meeting was convened with the purpose of discussing concrete responses and measures to be taken toward reviewing the plan to meet Japan's commitment in the Kyoto Protocol to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by six percent. The discussion took place among seven ministers concerned with measures to prevent global warming - the Minister for Foreign Affairs, the Minister of Finance, the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, the Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the Minister of the Environment and the Chief Cabinet Secretary.

Prime Minister Fukuda said in his opening address, "The global warming issue will be the major subject on the agenda of next year's G8 Hokkaido Toyako Summit. Without the renewal of the plan to ensure the achievement of the commitment to reduce emissions by six percent, and thereby putting Japan on a solid footing, we would never be able to carry our point persuasively at the Summit. I ask each and every one of you to keep that firmly in mind as you advance discussions in this meeting."
