Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda held the 1st meeting of the Unified Headquarters for the Regional Revitalization at the Prime Minister's Official Residence.

The Headquarters was established in response to the Prime Minister's instructions to integrate the implementation systems of four headquarters-the Urban Renaissance Headquarters, the Headquarters for the Promotion of Special Zones for Structural Reform, the Headquarters for the Regional Revitalization and the Headquarters for Revitalization of Central Urban Districts-and to compile a comprehensive strategy under the policy of "carrying out policies in a coordinated and comprehensive manner, by integrating the implementation systems established under the Cabinet and creating a system to plan and implement strategy for regional revitalization in an integrated way," which was outlined in Prime Minister Fukuda's policy speech as a response to the issues of "disparities" between rural areas and cities.

At the meeting attended by all Cabinet members, Prime Minister Fukuda said, "The Cabinet's most important task is to first listen to the voices of people in the local regions and to make utmost efforts for regional revitalization, so that the widening of disparities between rural areas and cities can be prevented and the vitality of local regions is recovered. Today's meeting of this unified headquarters serves as the starting point of our effort toward regional revitalization. I ask the government to unite their efforts to add ingenuity to their policies and make attentive responses to bring out effective structural reform for regional revitalization."
