Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda attended the inauguration ceremony for Japan Post Group held in Tokyo.

Four postal services which had operated under the Government and then a public corporation for more than 130 years were privatized and holding companies were established on October 1 after about two years of preparation following the enactment of the bills related to the privatization of the postal services in 2005. The ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Fukuda, the Cabinet members including Mr. Hiroya Masuda, the Minister for Internal Affairs and Communications, and Mr. Junichiro Koizumi, the former Prime Minister of Japan, who were invited as guests.

Prime Minister Fukuda gave his congratulatory guest remarks, saying, "The privatization of the postal services will enable prompt responses to the future changes in economic situations in Japan and overseas and will increase autonomy, creativity and efficiency in their management. At the same time the Group will strive to provide more convenient services to the people by further taking advantage of the valuable asset of the people, the post office network. The people of Japan have great expectations of the privatization of the postal services, which concern their daily lives. I expect the post offices and postal services will continue to anchor the sense of reassurance of the people as before and bring hope to the people in local communities through the enhancement of various services that are tailored to the users' needs."
