Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama visited Shiga Prefecture and observed an integrated pre-school facility combining kindergarten and nursery school, and a solar panel manufacturing plant, among other places.

Later, the Prime Minister toured Lake Biwa on an environment-friendly cruise ship, and received an explanation from Dr. Yukiko Kada, Governor of Shiga Prefecture, on environmental preservation efforts in Lake Biwa and other issues.

Afterwards, Prime Minister Hatoyama stated his impressions, saying, "I think it was a very fruitful day visiting Shiga Prefecture which is making most innovative efforts in addressing issues that Japan must tackle from now on. Just as the government is taking a step forward in integrating the kindergarten and nursery school systems, I saw this facility that has made our aspiration a reality by overcoming practical difficulties, which taught me what is important. I strongly felt that Shiga Prefecture is also a top runner in the area of the environment, having committed much effort to studying environmental issues surrounding Lake Biwa."
