Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama held the first meeting of the Ministerial Committee on Basic Policies at the Prime Minister's Office.

Mr. Naoto Kan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for National Strategy; Mr. Hirofumi Hirano, Chief Cabinet Secretary; Mr. Hirohisa Fujii, Minister of Finance; Ms. Mizuho Fukushima, Minister of State for Consumer Affairs and Food Safety, Social Affairs, and Gender Equality; and Mr. Shizuka Kamei, Minister of State for Financial Services and Minister of State for Postal Reform attended the meeting.

During the meeting, the Committee members discussed policies for the formulation of the FY2010 budget among other things. Based on these discussions, they confirmed that a Cabinet decision on the basic policy for the formulation of the budget would be made as soon as possible.

Prior to this meeting, the first meeting of the government's ruling coalition leaders and secretary general level officials of the ruling parties including Mr. Ichiro Ozawa, Secretary General of the Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ), was held at the Prime Minister's Office to discuss issues such as the policy for the formulation of the FY2010 budget.
