Intellectual Property Strategy Headquarters

At the meeting, the Intellectual Property Strategic Program 2009 was compiled. The program, aiming to bolster globally Japan's competitiveness in intellectual property, sets out the policy to carry out prioritized measures in the 3rd Basic Policy on Intellectual Property Strategy decided on April 6. These measures are: (i) strengthening of an intellectual property strategy for the promotion of innovation; (ii) strengthening of an intellectual property strategy for global activities; (iii) promotion of a growth strategy for "soft power" industries; (iv) securing of stability and predictability of intellectual property right; and (v) construction of an intellectual property system responsive to users' needs.
In closing, Prime Minister Aso said, "I appreciate your active discussions on the intellectual property strategy for the future. Japan possesses leading-edge research outcomes in the world, such as induced pluripotent stem cells (iPS cells). It is important that such outcomes be promptly commercialized by businesses. We should never be left behind in the global competition to acquire intellectual property. It is also important that the government responsibly take actions against counterfeit and pirated goods. In any event, I ask that the intellectual property strategy be further strengthened based on today's discussions."
