Prime Minister Taro Aso held talks with the Hon. Johnson Toribiong, President of the Republic of Palau, at the Prime Minister's Office.

At the beginning of the meeting, Prime Minister Aso said, "I welcome your first visit to Japan as President. Historically, Japan and Palau have been connected with various ties as partners. I am aware that the President mentioned Japan as a friend of Palau in your recent address to the Congress. For its part, Japan intends to extend as much cooperation as possible in areas such as tourism and economic cooperation."

At the meeting, the leaders discussed matters such as the 5th Summit Meeting between Japan and the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) and United Nations Security Council reform. Prime Minister Aso stated that Japan wished to bring up environment and climate change issues, the human security issue, and strengthening of people-to-people exchanges between Japan and island countries as major subjects on the agenda of the 5th Summit Meeting between Japan and the PIF. On United Nations Security Council reform, Prime Minister Aso expressed appreciation for Palau's consistent strong support for Japan's bid for permanent membership.
