Prime Minister Taro Aso attended the first meeting of the Council on Regional Administration at the Prime Minister's Office.

The Council consists of 21 members including Mr. Koichi Sueyoshi (Special Advisor to the Cabinet and former mayor of Kitakyushu City) who serves the Chair of the Council, heads of municipalities, and corporate managers, among others. Mr. Hiroya Masuda, former Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications, Mr. Atsuo Saka, former Assistant Chief Cabinet Secretary, and others also participated in the meeting as special advisors. The participants exchanged views on specific steps to bolster the capacity of regional administration.

In his address, Prime Minister Aso said, "I have always been saying that Japan will not revive unless its regions are revitalized. Whenever I go to vibrant regions, I see leaders of good quality. We need to develop that kind of human resources. As the administrative capacity of heads of municipalities will be tested, I would like to organize ideas from you all and use them to catalyze regional revitalization."
