Prime Minister Taro Aso attended intensive deliberations at a meeting of the Budget Committee of the House of Representatives on finance and the economy as well as on pension and medical systems.

Asked about the current economic situation, Prime Minister Aso said, "The current financial crisis has caused a level of financial shrinkage that is not only extraordinary, but is unprecedented. It has rapidly spread across the nations of the world. The shrinkage will certainly have an effect on the real economy and that should be our biggest concern; this is not a mere financial issue. The huge task that we bear is to minimize the effect, and we are implementing various measures to this end."
