Prime Minister Shinzo Abe received requests from Ms. Mikiko Iida, the President of Niigata Okami* Association, and Mr. Tadashi Takahashi, the President of Niigata Prefectural Tourist Association.

Niigata Prefecture has been seriously hit by harmful rumors following the recent Niigataken Chuetsu-oki Earthquake in 2007, one result being a decline in the number of tourists. President Takahashi requested that the Prime Minister promote publicity campaigns to communicate the safety of Niigata Prefecture nationwide and abroad as a response measure.

Furthermore, on the occasion of this courtesy call, President Iida presented local specialties produced in Niigata Prefecture (Juzen-brand eggplant, chamame soybeans, rice and sake) to appeal their safety.

Prime Minister Abe said, "The Government will make efforts to communicate the safety of Niigata to combat harmful rumors."

* Okami refers to a landlady running a ryokan, or Japanese-style lodge.
