Prime Minister Shinzo Abe attended the first meeting of the Strategy Council for Envisioning the Future of Food, held in the Prime Minister's Official Residence.

The Council is held with the purpose of discussing policies for ensuring a stable supply of food to the people and sharing awareness on food issues among the people at large. Against the current backdrop of signs of change in the world food situation, the discussions on food, which is indispensable to daily life, are to be made based on an accurate understanding of the global state of affairs.

In his address, Prime Minister Abe said, "I firmly believe that the future of agriculture, as a strategic industry of the new century, is bright. Japan's agricultural products are of extremely high quality. Developing a structure to provide the people with even safer and better tasting natural agricultural products is precisely what I believe to be the essence of the national agricultural policy. Our task is to build a structure to ensure that Japan will not face food shortages in future generations. I ask the Council to envision a future where young people recognize agriculture as an area and industry with truly great future potential and are inspired to take it up."
