On the morning of the final day of the G8 Summit, the G8 leaders held a meeting with the leaders of African countries, followed by a meeting with India, the People's Republic of China, the Federative Republic of Brazil, the Republic of South Africa and the United Mexican States. Afterwards, Dr. Angela Merkel, the Federal Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, issued the Chair's Summary, which noted the leaders' agreements on the world economy and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and called for the peace and security of Africa and the resolution of the North Korean nuclear and abduction issues. With this, the G8 Summit drew to a close.
In the afternoon, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe held a meeting with Mr. Hu Jintao, the President of the People's Republic of China. At the meeting, Prime Minister said, "Cooperation between Japan and China in the area of climate change will help build a 'mutually beneficial relationship based on common strategic interests.' I intend to deepen dialogue and discussion between the two countries for further cooperation." The Prime Minister then explained Japan's strategy entitled "Cool Earth 50." In response, President Hu, while referring to common but differentiated responsibility, said, "I would like to strive together with Japan to solve the climate change issues. Japan's proposal is of positive significance, and as such China will consider it seriously. I too would like to strengthen our cooperation to that end." In addition, the two leaders discussed their bilateral relations, confirming that the recent visit by Premier Wen Jiabao to Japan had served to steadily advance the two countries' steps toward a mutually beneficial relationship based on common strategic interests. Prime Minister Abe then held a press conference before holding a meeting with Mr. Ban Ki-moon, the Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), in which the leaders exchanged opinions on climate change, the UN Security Council reform and regional situations, including North Korea. Having completed the full itinerary of his four-day visit to Germany, the Prime Minister left for Japan on the government plane at midnight on June 8, arriving at Haneda Airport on the evening of June 9.
