Prime Minister Shinzo Abe held a meeting with Mr. Vaclav Klaus, the President of the Czech Republic at the Prime Minister's Official Residence.

At the beginning of the meeting, Prime Minister Abe said, "I cordially welcome your first visit to Japan in 11 years. Japan and the Czech Republic marked the 50th anniversary of the normalization of relations yesterday. It is highly gratifying that our countries are enjoying very smooth bilateral relations."

During the meeting, Prime Minister Abe indicated his eagerness to further strengthen bilateral relations and work together on international issues. President Klaus in response welcomed the progress of bilateral relations centered on economic ties. He also expressed his hopes for further investment by Japanese companies into his country.

The two leaders furthermore exchanged opinions on the situation in North Korea, cooperation with the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) and United Nations (UN) reform. They also agreed to further build up their cooperation within the framework of V4+1, the Visegrad Four (the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary and Slovakia) and Japan.
