Prime Minister Shinzo Abe received a courtesy call from Bono, vocalist of the Irish rock group U2, who is also known as an activist on the issues of poverty and AIDS.

At the beginning of the meeting, Bono presented Prime Minister Abe with a pair of sunglasses from a campaign for the eradication of AIDS. Bono said that he highly valued Japan's contributions to the effort to tackle the issue of infectious disease in Africa, and expressed his hopes that Japan would continue to take a global lead on the issue.

In response, Prime Minister Abe remarked that the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria had originated in the discussions at the Kyushu-Okinawa Summit, held when he was Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary. Prime Minister Abe also noted that it had been the first time that Japan had invited African leaders to the Summit, and said that in light of the importance of Asia-Africa cooperation, Japan would carry on providing assistance to Africa.
